Understanding floor-plan scale

Scale sounds like a technical detail, but it is the single thing that makes a floor plan more than a sketch: it lets you read real measurements straight off the drawing, and check that things fit.

Reading the measurements

A scale like 1:50 means one unit on the plan equals fifty in reality — so 1 cm drawn is 50 cm real, and 2 cm is 1 m. Common architectural scales are 1:50 and 1:100 for whole rooms and homes. It is the same idea whether it is written as a ratio (1:50), as "1 cm = 0.5 m", or, on a grid, as "one square = 0.5 m" — all just fix how drawing distance maps to real distance. The only rule that matters is consistency: every part of the plan must use the same ratio, or nothing lines up.

Keeping a sketch true

This is where a grid earns its keep. Instead of doing arithmetic for every wall, you decide what one square means and then count squares — a 4 m wall at 0.5 m per square is simply eight squares. This tool does the counting for you: set the scale, and each wall is labelled with its real length as you draw, so the plan stays honest without a calculator. Pick a scale where a wall you know comes out right (draw a 3 m wall, confirm it says 3 m), and from then on everything you draw — walls, furniture, clearances — is trustworthy. Scale is not the boring part of a plan; it is the part that makes the plan useful.
